These pictures are taken from a demonstration in Denmark when the government took our house, ‘Ungdomshuset’ (‘the youth house’ in english). The house where everyone could come and be accepted for who they are, was taken away from us. I fucking hate the government.
i think this is the place connected to the ‘queer jihad' group, this makes me super sad
The building was demolished in 2007 after tons of riots, marches, and them occupying and defending the space from cops with Molotov’s and stones. 690 young people were arrested after the government ruled that the place should be torn down and the young people removed. The rioting was so intense that the workers who tore it down work masks to cover their identities.
I am not sure if it is connected officially to any single group or cause, but they managed to materialize thousands of young people on several occasions to try and save it. There was even a 3000 person women-only demonstration at one point. Pretty amazing that they organized so tightly in and around the space. Doesn’t surprise me at all that the government made any space that makes young people into a force like this a priority for demolition.
yeah it really fucking sucked when the government took it.
if anyone feel like it theres a documentary, called 69, on youtube
its in danish, but theres english subs
part 1 - part 2 - part 3 - part 4 - part 5
but i have to say that.. uh.. maybe ungdomshuset wasn’t as great as it is made out to be. i wont get too in to it, but generally 1. very white-ppl-only (not on purpose but it was kinda like, you know.. the riot grrrl movement or s/t) but i’m not gonna get too much into that rn
2. everyone was welcome.. some were just more welcome than others. i have friends who’s gone there to support local bands / eat / drink / participate in workshops / whatever, and have just been stared at with disgust until they felt so uncomfortable they had to leave. for not looking “punk enough”
i guess what i’m trying to say is that over all ungdomshuset was a hella rad place with fucking great events, but everything has a backside, so it would be really nice if people realised that.
and fun fact - we have a new ungdomshus in denmark now. it’s not the same, but it’s a small victory!
